Community Programs Overview

As a locally-owned and operated electric co-op, BEMC has a special commitment to our communities, to improving the quality of life in the area we serve.  We provide support for a host of community events and activites and also have several targeted programs:

Since 1994, NC co-ops have awarded nearly $10 million dollars in Bright Ideas Grants to K-12 teachers, funding more than 9,000 projects, affecting nearly 2 million students. These grants provide teachers with funds up to $2,000 for creative teaching ideas.  Teachers can apply online starting in April, and grants are awarded in Oct/Nov each year.   Read more  . . .

The BEMC Community Grants program is funded by the proceeds of our auction at the annual meeting each year. The goal is to lend a helping hand to community groups with worthy projects in five major areas: family services, civic and community programs, cultural and arts programs, emergency services and economic development. Groups may apply for up to $2,500 starting in December, and through Feb 15 of the following year.  Grants are awarded in Mar/April.   Read more . . .

Each year, BEMC awards two $5,000 college scholarships, one for a Brunswick County student and one for a student from the Columbus County area served by the co-op.  Awards are based on a combination of academic and community factors and most importantly, a 1500 word essay. Details and the essay topic are announced in early December and the deadline to submit falls in March of the following year.  Read more . . .

Since 2008, this community effort has helped thousands of seniors and families in our area with winter heating bills. Each year, BEMC provides up to $50,000 to match donations from the community. 100% of all donations go to help people, and the funds are administered through local agencies, Brunswick Family Assistance and the Columbus County Dept of Aging.  To learn how you can help, Read more . . .

We support local chambers of commerce and economic development initiatives and through our affiliate company Rural Consumer Services Corporation, we help promote business development, business retention and expansion in the BEMC service area. Read more . . .
