Bright Ideas
Brunswick EMC originated the Bright Ideas program in 1994. Other co-ops across the state joined in quickly and today all 27 electric cooperatives in NC participate, providing teachers with funding to help them provide top-quality instruction. Since 1994, the cooperatives have awarded Bright Ideas grants totaling more than $6.5 million dollars to teachers across the state, funding more than 5,400 programs affecting well over one million students. Bright Ideas grants can be as much as $2,000 each and are available to all teachers in grades K-12. The grants are awarded to teachers who develop creative programs that are not funded within the usual school budget process.
At the Bright Ideas Awards Luncheon in November for the 2009/2010 school year, BEMC awarded $33,914 in grant checks to teachers from Brunswick and Columbus Counties with their principals and Superintendents Katie McGee (Brunswick) and Dan Strickland (Columbus) looking on. Robert W. Leavitt, Jr., CEO of BEMC thanked the winning teachers and commented on the importance of their work in our communities and as examples for their students.
Grant applications open in the spring of each year with a deadline in mid-September. and awards are announced in November. For more information, go to: www.ncbrightideas.com
